Re: Baptism Policy

October 14, 2015

Lakeview United Church Council Meeting

          (Board Room – 7:00 p.m.)

Greetings to all of the Council members:

In our ongoing ministry of Word, Sacrament, and Pastoral Care we continually strive towards clarity in our administrative decisions and paperwork and policies which surround the work which we do. There are times where policy is not as clear as we wish it would be so our ongoing mission is to always invent and reinvent and come to a place where things are more clear and everyone is on ‘the same page.’ So it is to this end where we look at baptism and the times of year where this sacrament could take place and folks would know the dates well beforehand and make plans accordingly.

The following dates (or liturgical seasons of the year) have been recommended and they are listed here for Council approval:

  • Early January -- coinciding with the Sunday where Jesus becomes baptized. This is usually the second or third Sunday after Christmas.
  • Middle of May -- Pentecost Sunday – following the season of Easter.
  • Latter part of September -- Creation Time – there is a Sunday in the Creation Time liturgical period which deals with water and this would be a wonderful opportunity for baptism.

We hope this can clarify the special dates for baptism and when folks call in terms of having their children or themselves baptized, we can offer some special dates. Of course, a pre-baptism session needs to take place beforehand and Council still offers their motion of approval for any and all baptisms which take place in the sanctuary, during worship, at Lakeview United Church.

Peace and blessings,

Rev. Jope Langejans
