Deer Park United Church is pleased to announce a series of “Dinner and Learns” in June through the Canadian Mental Health Association-Calgary Region! All workshops are free to attend and will run from 6:30-8:00pm in the Fellowship Hall.

  • Monday, June 5: Coping With Stress- 1 in 6 Canadians have thought about suicide when under stress.
  • Monday, June 12: The Stigma of Mental Illness- 1 in 5 Calgarians will experience a mental illness at some point in their life, yet every day Calgarians suffer in silence.
  • Monday, June 19: Suicide Awareness-The Suicide Awareness Education Service helps prevent suicide through comprehensive awareness building in the community.

We march in support of them. We march to call for the enactment of TRC recommendations 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 18, 18, 30, 31, and 41. Meet at the Elizabeth Fry Society. March to the Legislative Grounds.

Job Title:                      STEP Student - Community Engagement

Congregation:            Lakeview United Church (LUC), 3023-63rd Avenue SW, Calgary

Hours:                       Full time summer position, 25-35 hours per week for 12-16 weeks from May to August 2017, including some evening and weekend work.

Position Summary:   LUC is looking for a summer student to help with community engagement and provide office cover. This will include researching the needs of our community, and suggesting and assisting with events in the church and community.   

Requirements:

  • An outgoing, engaging personality with patience, tact and excellent communication skills. 
  • Experience working with volunteers and organizing community events.
  • University or college student, studying Business, Marketing, Communication, Theology or related disciplines.  Must be eligible for employment under the STEP program.
  • Must be able to lift 20kg, and assist with movement of furniture and equipment.
  • Office and computer skills including MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Some web or social media expertise preferred.
  • Knowledge of the United Church of Canada or similar mainstream protestant denominations

 

Key eligibility requirements under STEP Program

  • Legally entitled to work and study in Canada, available for full-time summer employment
  • International students and Temporary Foreign Workers are not eligible for STEP
  • Current student, returning to a post-secondary institution to continue studying full-time in the fall in a Diploma, Degree or Certificate program

In each session we will view and then discuss the videos that complement his best-selling book of the same title. The sessions will take place at St. Laurence Anglican on Tuesdays February 7, 14 and 21.  There will both be an afternoon session (1:30 – 3:00) and an evening session (7:30 – 9:00 pm).  There is no cost for these sessions but please register by emailing The Rev. Food Bank: The Food Bank box will remain in the Narthex for the next several months, and emptied as needed. Let us all try to help those who may not have the staples available for a hot meal during this cold weather.

 

Second Office Clean-up and Archiving: I am looking for help to go through the papers and files in the second office. I would also like to update our archiving (mainly pictures). I would like to tackle this this project the week of Jan.17-21. If you can spare a few hours please contact Nancy Gillean 403-249-0505.

“The Happy Prince” Live Performance: A brand-new family Christmas musical! The Painted Fish Performing Arts Society presents a story about a gold statue, a little swallow, and a town and family who learn of God’s love at Christmas. There are three shows: 7:00pm on December 3rd at St. Luke’s Anglican Church, 3:00pm on December 4th at Forest Lawn United Church, and 7:30pm at St. Lawrence Anglican Church. Tickets are $15. Collecting Unwrapped Gifts for Glamorgan Care Centre. Many of these folks are former street people and do not have families to support them. In some cases we are the only ones who remember them at Christmas. There are 35 men and 17 women. Socks, hats and gloves are always needed, and a new suggestion this year: the residents love gift cards ($5-10) to either 7/11 or Starbucks both within walking distance of the home. There will be a box under the narthex table until December 11 for donations.
