Coffee and Conversation We know this is a special time after Worship and for some, a highlight of the week in being with church family. But, this doesn’t just happen without volunteers. Volunteers Needed: We are looking for someone who can give a once a month, ~15 minute commitment to set up 2 tables and chairs for our Torchbearers Beta rental group. If you are able please let Jax in the office know at 403.242.5760 or lakviewuc@telus.net.

 

Naramata Spiritual Eldering Course: September 9-16. Come, have fun and learn with us as we present a new perspective on growing older! Warming up to Worship Resumes September 10: Come out from 9:00-9:45 before the Sunday services each week, and join us as we engage in a group discussion about that week’s readings. All are welcome. We have a lot of fun examining the readings of the day and discovering how the text might become meaningful in our lives. Bring a Bible and your morning coffee and join the conversation.

KAIROS Blanket Exercise: St Thomas United Church 100 Hawkwood Blvd NW is hosting a KAIROS Blanket Exercise, a workshop that explores the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous  peoples in Canada. This exercise will be guided by a KAIROS trained facilitator as well as an Indigenous Elder. For those with allergy concerns, please note there will not be a smudge ceremony held in the room. A simple supper will be served following the exercise (vegetarian & gluten free options available).  Saturday, September 23, 1-5pm, in the Mountain View Room (upstairs), no official cost but  donations are appreciated. Thanks! To all who were a part of the Annual Summer Potluck. It was a time of great food, friends and fellowship. A special thanks for the many who handled kitchen duties (there were a lot of dishes to be washed and put away), and for those who helped in cleaning the Fellowship Hall 

Missing Glasses? On Monday, July 24, 2017 Ewa our Caretaker found a pair of glasses in the Sanctuary. They will be on the narthex table for now and will kept in Stirling’s office for safe keeping during the week.

Burn 24-7 Calgary On July 14th to 15th Burn 24-7 Calgary will be holding a weekend of Worship at 178099 96th street West Foothills in Calgary. There will be continuous worship from 6pm until 10pm on Friday the 14th and we will pick up again on Saturday the 15th from 12 noon until 6pm.  There is free camping available on the property, bathrooms will be available, but plan to bring everything else you might need for a great weekend of seeking God together in worship!  This is a FREE event.

Dream Centre Annual Stampede Breakfast. Get your cowboy boots ready and join us on Thursday, July 6th from 8:00 to 11:00 AM for our annual Stampede Pancake Breakfast co-hosted by Shine FM and The Light AM 700. Living with Wildlife: Thursday, July 6, 2017 at the FCJ Retreat and Conference Centre from 7-9pm. The Calgary Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in association with the FCJ Centre would like to invite your community to attend this event which seeks to teach people how to live alongside snowshoe hares and other wildlife

Westwinds Music Society Summer Program 2017: Registration for the Westwinds Summer Programs is open the deadline for registration has been extended until July 7th and is a user-pay, adults-only program open to all Westwinds members and non-members. The Concert band and choir will practice at Lakeview united church on Wednesdays from 7-9pm starting July 26th and the Jazz band practices Thursdays from 7-9pm starting July 27th. Costs are $100 for the first group and $75 for each additional group, payment must be done through Paypal.

Board Game Café: Fundraiser for Famine Relief. The Canadian government is matching donations to the Famine in Africa up until June 30, so on Saturday June 24, in the Lower Hall, we will be holding a Board Game Café to raise funds, and have reached out to several young adult groups for support in this initiative. If you are able to, please donate baked goods so that they can be sold at the event.

 

On Sunday, June 25, 10:30am St. Matthew’s United Church will be having its 13th Annual African Spirituals Worship Service honoring Journey From Slavery to Freedom. Each year, the St. Matthew’s choir – under the direction of David Ferguson – commemorates and pays tribute to the historic struggles of the countless men, women and children who were victims of the slave trade. This years’ service is especially bittersweet as it coincides with conductor David Ferguson’s retirement.

 

Open House on the SW Ring Road. On June 28th from 6-9pm The Alberta Ministry of Transportation will be holding an open house on the SW Ring road in the Upper Hall. This will be a great venue to learn more about this project!

Westwinds Music Society Summer Program 2017: Registration for the Westwinds Summer Programs is open the deadline to register is June 15 and is a user-pay, adults-only program open to all Westwinds members and non-members. The Concert band and choir will practice at Lakeview united church on Wednesdays from 7-9pm starting July 26th and the Jazz band practices Thursdays from 7-9pm starting July 27th. Costs are $100 for the first group and $75 for each additional group, payment must be done through Paypal.

The Warehouse is Closing: The Warehouse Saima Jamal managed to find for donations to the Syrian refugees last year is closing the end of June. There is free clothing, furniture, household, appliances, toys, children and adult books, and baby items for all newcomers, low income earners, single parents or anyone needing a leg up. Job Title:                      STEP Student - Community Engagement

Congregation:            Lakeview United Church (LUC), 3023-63rd Avenue SW, Calgary

Hours:                       Full time summer position, 25-35 hours per week for 12-16 weeks from May to August 2017, including some evening and weekend work.

Position Summary:   LUC is looking for a summer student to help with community engagement and provide office cover. This will include researching the needs of our community, and suggesting and assisting with events in the church and community.   

Requirements:

  • An outgoing, engaging personality with patience, tact and excellent communication skills. 
  • Experience working with volunteers and organizing community events.
  • University or college student, studying Business, Marketing, Communication, Theology or related disciplines.  Must be eligible for employment under the STEP program.
  • Must be able to lift 20kg, and assist with movement of furniture and equipment.
  • Office and computer skills including MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel. Some web or social media expertise preferred.
  • Knowledge of the United Church of Canada or similar mainstream protestant denominations

 

Key eligibility requirements under STEP Program

  • Legally entitled to work and study in Canada, available for full-time summer employment
  • International students and Temporary Foreign Workers are not eligible for STEP
  • Current student, returning to a post-secondary institution to continue studying full-time in the fall in a Diploma, Degree or Certificate program
